IIT Kharagpur closed campus until May 23 amid growing COVID cases
Employees who participate in the delivery of essential services will continue to work on campus, following all COVID principles. Researchers and other college students were also advised to return home.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur on Thursday announced that its offices would remain closed until May 23 following an increase in COVID-19 cases.
Without essential services, no work will be done from campus, Registrar Tamal Nath told PTI.
“We have decided to close unnecessary offices on campus from Friday to May 23, and staff will be working from home. This would be like teaching online classes to students, ”he said.
Employees who are involved in delivering essential services will continue to work on campus, following all the principles of COVID, he said.
Researchers and other college students were also advised to return home.
The registrar on Wednesday asked researchers who lived in hostels to go home because of the limited space for isolation and treatment facilities.
College stores that sell essentials will be allowed to open a limited time as prescribed by the state government.
“Our campus is not outside West Bengal or India. Therefore, whatever happens to the state and the country, it will definitely be shown on our campus, ”said Nath about the state of COVID at IIT.
"However, IIT-Kharagpur welcomed all measures and kept the situation under control," he added.
