With Robotics and Automation added, GATE 2027 will have 30 test papers. IIT Madras has also released revised syllabi for the GATE 2027 papers, so aspirants should make sure they are preparing according to the latest syllabus rather than relying solely on previous-year patterns.

GATE Registration 2027 Through GOAPS

Candidates can complete their applications through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) available through the official GATE 2027 website.

For Indian nationals, registration through DigiLocker is mandatory. IIT Madras has advised candidates to create or update a verified DigiLocker account before completing the application process.

GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria

GATE is open to candidates pursuing or having completed eligible undergraduate-level programmes in Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture, Commerce, Arts and Humanities.

According to the official information, candidates who are currently studying in the third year or higher of an eligible undergraduate degree programme, or those who have already completed an eligible degree, can apply, subject to the applicable eligibility conditions.

Candidates should check the detailed eligibility criteria for their particular academic qualification before applying.

GATE 2027 Syllabus Revised

IIT Madras has announced revisions to the GATE 2027 syllabus. Candidates preparing for the examination should therefore download and study the latest syllabus for their selected paper.

Apart from the new Robotics and Automation paper, updates have also been made to certain existing papers and paper codes. IIT Madras has specifically highlighted changes involving Biotechnology (BT), Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF), and sectional paper codes under XE, XH and XL.

Aspirants should avoid preparing solely from older GATE syllabus documents.

What is GATE Used For?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is a national-level examination conducted by IISc and the IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board under the Ministry of Education.

A valid GATE score can be used for admission to postgraduate and doctoral programmes at various institutions, with possible financial assistance in eligible programmes. Several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) also use GATE scores as part of their recruitment processes.

However, qualifying GATE does not automatically guarantee admission, a scholarship or a PSU job. Individual institutions and organisations have their own eligibility and selection criteria.

Important Changes in GATE 2027

Candidates should keep the following changes in mind:

  • Robotics and Automation (RA) has been introduced as a new GATE paper.
  • GATE 2027 will have 30 test papers.
  • The syllabus for GATE papers has been revised.
  • DigiLocker registration is mandatory for Indian nationals.
  • Candidates can apply for one or up to two papers, subject to permitted combinations.
  • Changes have been made to certain paper codes and two-paper combinations.

The admit card will be available for download through the GATE portal and will not be sent by post or as an email attachment. Candidates must also carry a valid original photo ID to the examination centre.
